Trying to readjust my backsight

A buddy and I went shooting tonight, and I let him use my 9mm (Kel-Tec PF9) for a while as I was shooting other guns. I didn't notice until after I'd shot a couple magazines that he'd adjusted the backsight (I'm left-handed, he's right-handed), and all of my shots kept going down and to the left of center mass despite where my frontsight was pointing. I didn't have time to adjust my backsight before we left the range so I'm not sure which way I need to adjust it to get it back the way it was, but if my shots are going to the left when I'm lining up my sights, should I move the backsight to the right to hit center? Is there a way I can tell if my shot will be centered without going to the range? I'd hate to have to use my gun in the interim and have my shot placement off because of my sights.

The best way to adjust the sights under these circumstances, is with your friends head. Smack him upside the head on the right side of his head with the left side of the gun. This will move the sight to the right and put it back on zero.

:36_1_30:Never mess with another mans sights.

You'll need to re-zero at the range or you're just guessing. When adjusting a rear sight for windage you need to move it in the opposite direction you want your point of impact to be. FWIW I shoot ambidextrously and don't find it necessary to adjust the sights according to which hand I'm holding the weapon in.

I think you have that backwards. Move rear sights to where you want the bullet to go. Fronts sights opposite.

If you are grouping left move rear sight right. If its not grouping don't move anything until it does.

This is correct.

Ditto that, move the back sight the same direction you want the POI (point of impact) to move. (up/down works the same way).

Think about an exaggerated example: you're looking down a rifle barrel with the sights in correct alignment and then the rear sight is moved an inch to the right. You then have to rotate the barrel to the right to make the sights align again.

No problem, the next time you adjust sights just do it while looking in a mirror and standing on your head, you'll get it right every time.

Yeah, just about. Most of my rifles do windage on the front sight, most of my pistols have fixed sights and I have a wire crossed somewhere.

Guess I hadn't posted an update since last week. I moved the backsight to the right and everything hits in a really tight grouping now. Thanks for the advice!
